Beauty, Brains And Bathroom Chemistry: A Reluctant Scientist’s Skincare Confessions

Have you ever caught your impeccably rational, logic-wrapped self, falling for something delightfully random and if I may dare say, bordering on nonsense?

I, a staunch devotee of reason and dismissive of fads, was certain I’d never be lured into the giddy world of skincare rituals. Yet here I am, the accidental wanderer among glittering aisles of French, Spanish or even good old English pharmacies, clutching tiny vials and tubs, squinting at ingredient lists more cryptic than a molecular biology exam.

Now I routinely run a brisk chemistry lecture in my head:

Is this niacinamide, or have I stumbled into a maze of other ‘-amides’ my medicinal chemistry professor kept repeating?
Wait, does this alpha-hydroxy acid need a neutralising base, or does it get along with a retinoid?
How do I balance the electrons in my own face?

I’ve balanced more redox (oxidation-reduction) reactions in my bathroom than I ever did in school. If you ever see me, brow furrowed, puzzling over the difference between octinoxate in my sunscreen and some obscure aromatic compound in my night serum—no, you didn’t!

Skin, that living, breathing organ, is our most loyal companion, our persistently evolving shield. Unlike houses or cars, we have no swaps, no upgrades. This is the only skin we inhabit for a lifetime.

If there was ever an argument for investing love (and the occasional dash of absurdity) into something, isn’t your own skin a worthy candidate?

This isn’t a quest to remain 21 forever. It’s about aging gracefully and being wholly, wonderfully in love with your changing self. Plumping up not just with serums but also with self-acceptance.

Let’s get technical for a moment.

Fun fact: your morning routine (AM) is all about shielding. Think of it as fortifying your fortress. Sunscreen is an absolute non-negotiable and not just on that Mediterranean holiday.

Now, about sunscreen. I used to think all sunscreens were created equal or that I could cleverly avoid them by walking on the shadier side of the street. Alas, the sun is less about shade and more about science. Apparently, there’s not just “the sun.” Oh no! There are UVA rays (the sly, silent types that slip through clouds and glass, making themselves comfortable in your skin’s deeper layers) and UVB rays (the rowdier bunch, notorious for that classic lobster-red sunburn after a carefree afternoon).

UVA rays are the undercover agents of aging. Over time, their handiwork can spur changes in pigmentation, hasten wrinkles and stir up those mischievous free radicals, kickstarting the process of photoaging. That’s why antioxidants (looking at you, vitamin C aka ascorbic acid, the superhero of free radical defence!) get a starring role, along with lightweight hydrating serums like hyaluronic acid (yes, it’s a glycosaminoglycan, if you must know), which keep your stratum corneum happily plump and moisturised.

And then you’re faced with SPF numbers and a mysterious parade of plus signs: SPF 30? 50? PA+++? I half expect a secret society handshake when I pick up a tube. Here’s what I’ve gathered from all my meandering: SPF is your everyday shield against UVB and the more “+” in the PA rating, the tougher it is on those UVA agents of chaos. The dream ticket? Something broad spectrum, a dash of SPF 30 magic and as many pluses as you can reasonably find. Bonus points if it’s child-approved and doesn’t double as a flytrap.

And as if picking for myself wasn’t enough, my daughter’s legendary fussiness with anything remotely sticky sent me down the sunscreen rabbit hole. Suddenly, it wasn’t just “Does it work?” but: Will she even let me near her with it, or will I be facing a meltdown before breakfast? The search became a quest for sunscreen that protects and passes the elusive “not sticky, not gloopy, slides-on-before-she-runs-off” test. Which, with today’s endless shelves, means I’ve sniffed, swatched and sampled enough tubes to start my own SPF library.

Of course, none of this counts for much, unless you actually put the stuff on. Here is where my great experiment falters. I know, I know! Consistency matters! My adherence? Charming in theory, random in practice. One day I’m layering up like a cautious chemist; the next I’m distracted, running late, hoping my hat counts as “coverage.” At least my daughter ensures I don’t forget to look for new formulas—just ones she’ll actually wear.

PS: This is just a picture for picture sake, not a brand I know or have tried.

Once the sun goes down, the real chemistry begins. Quite literally. Your PM routine shifts from protection to restoration and the amplification of repair. Enter the world of retinoids (vitamin A derivatives famed for collagen synthesis), peptides (tiny protein fragments instructing your skin to firm up) and gentle acids like lactic or glycolic to accelerate cellular turnover. Don’t forget those barrier-repairing occlusive and humectant moisturisers (think sodium PCA, ceramides and fatty acids) to fend off water loss and let your skin catch up while you sleep.

Why the double act? During the day, your skin faces oxidative stress, pollutants and photo-damage. At night, cellular repair and regeneration step into high gear, making it prime time for actives that brighten and renew. Always finished with a moisture-locking finale.

With time, skin’s needs evolve: oil production slows, natural moisturising factors dwindle, collagen takes early retirement. What glowed in youth may need coaxing, restoration and extra kindness as the years go by. The chemistry lesson never ends, but the self-love deepens.

So yes, consult your dermatologist (please!) and remember: this is a celebration of my curiosity and erratic adventures, not an expert prescription.

Here’s to being both scientific and sentimental with yourself, staying curious, kind and sometimes a little silly. Thanks for journeying to the end of this skincare story. My your routines, much like your spirit, remain bright, balanced and beautifully evolving.
