Stay True To Your Roots
In a world consumed by reels and trends,
I want you to stay true to your roots,
Know who you are and where you come from
Appreciate your morals and values.
In a world that’s always competing
Against one another to show off money and might,
I want you to slow down and listen to the stories
That bring the memories of home to life.
I want you to immerse in poetry and songs
In literature that sings praise,
Of your culture, language and history
So you know how our young ones we raise.
You come from the land of the mighty Brahmaputra
Flowing through the plains of Assam,
Ask your mother for stories of warmth and joy
That you won’t find on the Gram.
Ask how people dress up and get together
To celebrate the spirit of Bihu in spring,
Ask how our fight for freedom
Keeps us united in harmony still.
Then there’s a paradise called Kashmir
To where you can trace your dad’s roots,
It’s a piece of heaven hidden by snow-capped mountains
Its orchards laden with ripe and juicy fruits.
Its beauty is magnified by the waters of the Dal
Where colourful shikaras sail like a dream,
Where the crisp golden leaves of the chinar
Silently fall off and float away in the stream.
Your culture is rooted in the myriad festivals
That a billion Indians celebrate as one,
Holi, Diwali, Eid or Christmas
People forget their differences and join in the fun.
In a world where people are glued to screens
I hope you take the time to read,
To lose yourself in worlds unseen
And let your heart and mind be freed.
Take the time to understand the Vedas and scriptures
Dive into the pages of history,
Let the knowledge and wisdom of the past
Guide you to unlock the universe’s mystery.
Your roots are diverse and beautiful
They are what make you unique,
I hope you feel proud of your heritage
And bloom with every story they speak.
